Sailors’ Valentines Workshop
November 7, 2026 - November 7, 2026
Saturday 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Teaching Artist:
Mandy Howe
Sailors’ valentines are intricate shell mosaics traditionally associated with the maritime world of the Caribbean, particularly Barbados, where women played an important role in creating and preserving this distinctive craft. Often brought home by sailors and travelers, these delicate objects became keepsakes of love, memory, and connection across distance.
In connection with Angel Otero’s exhibition, join us for a hands-on workshop exploring the history and artistry of this tradition. Held in the Cushing Gallery, surrounded by Otero’s work, participants will learn about the cultural and maritime history of sailor valentines before creating their own shell mosaic design, a contemporary keepsake inspired by the enduring connections, memories, and stories carried across the sea.
All supplies are included, and each piece will be created for presentation in a handmade mahogany box frame.
