Experiencing the Abstract: Ways of Seeing

Join us for an evening celebrating the work of Sheila Isham in Sheila Isham: Between Worlds!

The evening will begin with a brief overview of Isham’s life and practice led by Artistic Director at the Newport Art Museum, Danielle Ogden.

Following, New York City–based Museum Educator Luned Palmer will help us explore how we understand abstract art through close-looking exercises she leads at the Noguchi Museum, The Jewish Museum, The Morgan Library and Museum, and more. Together, we will look closely at artworks and reflect on our observations, associations, and responses, considering how personal reactions shape our understanding of the art we see.

Luned Palmer grew up in Newport and happily remembers using a loom at the Newport Art Museum when she was five and is delighted to be back at NAM!  She is an experienced New York City based museum educator with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Swarthmore College and a Master of Science in Museum Education from Bank Street College. Currently, she facilitates all types of programs for all people at The Jewish Museum, The Noguchi Museum and with Arts and Minds, and her experience includes teaching at The Morgan Library and Museum, The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, The Nassau County Museum of Art and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Luned is dedicated to creating inclusive pathways for learning and engagement in museums and passionate about culturally responsive teaching, art inquiry, and uplifting each other while collaboratively working towards a world that is abundant with care. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two daughters and by Noguchi’s words: “Art is everywhere. The whole world is art. The only thing is, some people see it and some people don’t. If one is really awake, he will see that the whole world is a symphony.”
