Newport String Project: Winter Concert
December 2, 2023 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Griswold House
Embrace Winter with Chamber Music!
We’re delighted to welcome the Newport String Project’s resident ensemble, the Newport String Quartet, to the galleries for a live chamber music performance – the second installment of its Newport County Concert Series, performing works by Bartók, Bacewicz, Kodály, Schulhoff, and Darvishi.
This concert features an eclectic program of duos, trios, and quartets by composers whose music has been subject to various forms of oppression and censorship. From familiar voices of the 20th century (Bartók and Kodály), to lesser known voices, whose work is finally getting its due (Bacewicz and Schulhoff), to important voices of today (Aftab Darvishi), this atmospheric and thought-provoking program is not to be missed.
We invite you to enjoy the exhibition of Iranian American artist Arghavan Khosravi, whose life and works have provided inspiration for the Quartet’s musical selections.
Seating is limited – advance reservations are highly recommended!
About the Newport String Project
The Newport String Project is a chamber music performance and youth mentoring initiative that aims to build a community that crosses boundaries of generation, heritage, and economic circumstances through access to inspiring musical experiences for all. The project strengthens the social and cultural fabric of the Newport community by offering students free use of instruments, free weekly lessons and group activities, as well as a concert series in venues throughout Newport that features its resident musicians, the Newport String Quartet. Now in its tenth season, the project is focused on growing and sustaining the organization so that it can continue to build long-term and meaningful relationships between children, families, professional musicians, and the Newport community at large.
