Mixed Media Portraiture Class

November 4, 2025 - December 2, 2025

5 sessions

Tuesdays 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Teaching Artist: Annabel Manning

Join us this Fall for a five-week, mixed-media portraiture class. In each class students will explore the theme of identity and portraiture using a variety of mediums, including collage and printmaking. Students will learn the artistic processes involved in designing collages, monotypes, and sunprints, while combining them into their individual portrait of themselves, a loved one, or anybody of their choosing. Students will work from photos, mirror images, or their own prior artworks, like pencil drawings or paintings created in other classes. To provide inspiration, especially in the early classes, we will look at traditional and contemporary artworks in the Newport Art Museum collections.

All supplies included.

About your teaching artist:

Annabel Manning is a visual artist and educator based in Middletown, Rhode Island, where she currently teaches at the Newport Art Museum, both on-site and in community outreach programs. Inspired by her relocation to the seashore, her current series of digital paintings began with photographs and collages.

Before moving to Rhode Island, Annabel worked as a social practice artist in New York City and Charlotte, where she developed art and literacy programs for various communities, including undocumented immigrants, bilingual families, and incarcerated individuals. Her work has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and internationally, including in Block Island, New York City, Charlotte, Durham, San Francisco, LA, Boston, Liverpool, and Germany.

Born in Mexico and also raised in Peru, Argentina, and the U.S. Annabel’s multicultural background informs her work and artistic approach. She holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, a B.F.A. in Painting and Video from the Massachusetts College of Art, and an M.F.A. in Experimental and Documentary Arts from Duke University.
