Sport! mines the Newport Art Museum’s permanent collection while introducing new perspectives to explore the artistry embedded in athletics. From the turbulent energy of The First New York Yacht Club Regatta by Fitz Henry Lane to Mahler B. Ryder’s dynamic mixed-media collage highlighting boxing, to Lissa Rivera’s photographic reflections on gender, this exhibition highlights how artists have long captured the physical, cultural, and symbolic dimensions of sport.

Together, these works chart a wide field by acknowledging everyday recreation and ritual, capturing the emotion and energy of movement, and celebrating sport as tradition and an integral part of cultural identity.
