Raise a glass as we celebrate the opening of THE COURT: Art in Play, the Newport Art Museum’s fall exhibition exploring the rich cultural history of court tennis through the lens of contemporary art.
Organized by internationally recognized artist and accomplished court tennis player Frederika Adam, the exhibition features works by Elizabeth Curren, Charles Johnstone, Joshua Mosley, Bill Sullivan, Robert Manice, and Adam herself—artists intimately attuned to the visual and symbolic language of the game.
Installed throughout the Museum’s historic galleries, this exhibition blends art, sport, and history, celebrating Newport as home to one of only eleven active court tennis courts in the United States, located at the International Tennis Hall of Fame (ITHoF).
From “Real Tennis” (or “Court Tennis”) and “Lawn Tennis” to Basque pelota and even imagined courts, the exhibition considers the enduring attraction of these architectural and psychological spaces. Through photography, mixed media, and film, the exhibiting artists capture the rhythm, atmosphere, and symbolism of the court in works that are physical, visual, and poetic.
