What’s Happening:
Art Book Palooza! Immerse yourself into the world of art books and zines. This hands-on activity, led by experienced art book makers Kyle Canyon and Hanson Coleman, will show you how to assemble your very own accordion or single page-style zine. Participants will then fill their book with images and text using a range of different mediums.
Gyotaku Fish Printing! Join Museum art educator Annabel Manning in the Museum School to learn the traditional Japanese art of printing images of fish. The word gyotaku is a combination of the Japanese words gyo which means “fish” and taku which means “rubbing”. The practice dates back to the mid-1800s when fishermen used it to record the size and species of their catch. Today, gyotaku prints are a realistic way to capture beautiful fish textures and patterns.
Circle of Life Mandalas Settle in with Nancy Bixby to celebrate the never ending circle of life through unique mandala creations, in honor of Jordan Seaberry’s We Live Until exhibition.
Superhero Costume Design What’s YOUR super power? Make an outfit for one of our mannequins that celebrates it, led by Niko Merritt of Sankofa Art & Solace.
En Plein Air Painting! Get excited for Wet Paint by painting “in the open air” with Museum educator Allie Elia. Try your hand at a watercolor scene on the Museum’s lawn, then add texture and detail with colored pencils and markers.
Toots-inspired Sculptures Make a DIY version of Toots Zynsky’s incredible glass sculptures with Museum educator Charlene Carpenzano.
Pollinator Fun Learn all about our wild spaces and the pollinators that make them lush and healthy with educators from Aquidneck Land Trust!
NewportPride Weavings Get into the spirit of Pride with Museum educator Erica Connolly by weaving your own festive Pride hanging.
Visit with Artist in Residence Ellen Xu in her studio and get busy making something inspired by her site specific installation.
Scavenger Hunts! Dig into our brand new exhibitions with a brand new scavenger hunt (or two!) They’re a great way to hone observational skills while having a ball.
Clay & Original Art Sale! Treat yourself to a beautiful piece of original artwork at our Museum School studio sale on the lawn (or the School if inclement weather.)
Thank you to our sponsors and partners!

The month-long event hosts artist talks and workshops led by New England talent at local Rhode Island art spaces. Hanson Coleman and Childish Books (Cb) hope to celebrate, create, and collect artist books and zine projects which could be enjoyed by a ‘child audience’, however defined. They care about making zine culture more available to children, and making the art and ideas of children more available in zine culture. Through interviews, reviews, publishing, and gatherings, they hope to generate a deeply playful readership and community. Follow on social media at @childish.books.
