Winter Speaker Series Returns, New Class Schedule Announced
NEWPORT, RI – The Newport Art Museum released today its schedule of winter art classes and the much-anticipated calendar for the Winter Speakers Series, a cornerstone of the Museum’s annual programming that is now in its 97th year.
“Our city may be renowned for its summer allure, but the winter season at the Newport Art Museum offers some of our most engaging opportunities for learning, creativity, and connection,” said Executive Director Danielle Ogden. “The Winter Speaker Series has long been a cherished forum for the exchange of ideas, spanning nearly a century. Alongside a robust lineup of classes—from sculpture to printmaking—there’s something for every interest to explore and enjoy at NAM this season.”
With a dynamic line-up of speakers thoughtfully curated by the Winter Speaker Series Committee, this year’s schedule covers politics, healthcare, art, and beyond. Each lecture will include an audience Q&A, followed by fellowship and refreshments. Subscriptions to the series are on sale now.
“For 97 years, the Winter Speaker Series has offered the public an eclectic series of talks on a wide range of topics from speakers who are experts in their fields,” said Johanna Becker, Chair of the Committee. “The program has been enthusiastically received, resulting in sellout lectures.”
Winter Speaker Series kicks off on January 11 with Darrell West, a senior fellow in the governance studies program at the Brookings Institution whose lead-off session will explore the political outlook for 2025, including emerging trends, the latest polls, and framing the incoming administration in historic context.
The other 2025 Winter Speaker Series presentations will be led by:
- January 18: Hidde Ploegh, Dutch biochemist at Boston Children’s Hospital
- January 25: Dr. Gregory Skomal, author, shark expert, and marine biologist at the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries
- February 1: Meg Winslow, curator of historical collections and archives at Mount Auburn Cemetery
- February 8: Artist Liz Collins whose show, “A Textile Wonderland of Color and Pattern” will open at the RISD Museum in July 2025
- February 15: Sydney Skybetter, choreographer and faculty director of the Brown Arts Institute
The winter calendar at Newport Art Museum is further enhanced by a schedule of hands-on classes that include ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing, mixed media, and printmaking, as well as a special holiday wreath workshop and a workshop on creative self-expression through collage. Classes and workshops are led by a talented slate of teaching artists: Kyle Canyon, Charlene Carpenzano, Erica Connolly, Celena Dionne, Cindy Gordon, Kris Greco, Corrinn Jusell, Maureen Kennedy-Antonellis, Bill Lane, Nancy Lyon, Annabel Manning, and Nicole Michalopoulos.Classes are held in the Museum School at the Coleman Center for Creative Studies, at 26 Liberty Street, and discounts are available for Museum members.
“The demand for our classes continues to grow, driven by a community that values and celebrates creative expression, and in recognition of an incredibly talented group of teaching artists. Our educators meet students of all ages and abilities where they are, empowering them to explore and further develop their skills and passions,” said Mary Kate Hickey, director of museum education.
