Sport!

Sport! mines the Newport Art Museum’s permanent collection while introducing new perspectives to explore the artistry embedded in athletics. From the seventeenth-century drama of a Flemish hunting scene after Frans Snyders to Mahler B. Ryder’s dynamic mixed-media collage highlighting boxing, to Lissa Rivera’s photographic reflections on gender, this exhibition highlights how artists have long captured the physical, cultural, and symbolic dimensions of sport.

Together, these works chart a wide field by acknowledging everyday recreation and ritual, capturing the emotion and energy of movement, and celebrating sport as tradition and an integral part of cultural identity.
