Winter Speaker Series 2024: Matthew Bird Virtual
February 3, 2024 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm At the Museum and Virtually on Vimeo
Who Really Designed the Things We Use?
Who made our stuff? We’re drawn to the simplicity of a single name, a design hero. But creating is a team sport! By listing one designer on a museum label, or teaching the art and design history of a limited canon of mostly male, mostly white creators, we miss the scores of invisible, underrepresented and unheralded designers who created in anonymity with no expectation of renown. Educator and design historian Matthew Bird will weave the connections and contrasts between iconic designs and anonymous objects, famous designers with ones you’ve never heard of, and illuminate the hands and histories behind the humble objects we rely upon everyday.
In-Person tickets for this lecture are sold out. You can still join us virtually on Vimeo.
Lecture recording will be available to all subscribers and ticket holders.
About our Speaker
Matthew Bird brings his professional experience as a product and exhibition designer into classrooms teaching design and design history. His knowledge of manufacturing techniques and materials informs his teaching and writing about design history. He also curates exhibitions that introduce design to fine-art museums and their public.
