Drink and Draw with Susan Petree

Are you an experienced artist? Or, are you someone who claims to have no artistic talent at all but what to give art a try? Come join other creative individuals for an evening of collage exploration! Susan Petree, abstract expressionist painter, will lead you in playing and experimenting with all different kinds of mixed media. Enjoy wine and charcuterie while you create an abstract work (or two!) to take home with you.

You will learn how to use found objects including corrugated cardboard, string, pasta, carpet liner, bubble wrap, and paper to add to the fun of your creation. Find a new freedom in all your creative endeavors by experiencing the power of experimentation. No matter your skill level, we guarantee you will have fun doing it – all while helping to support the Newport Art Museum!

All materials will be provided. Feel free to bring your own canvas and collage components if desired.

About the Artist:

Susan Hunter Petree grew up in a Foreign Service family and spent her childhood moving between Virginia, Japan, and Ethiopia. She attended Emma Willard School and the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with an economics and Japanese studies degree from Stanford University.

After more than 30 years in the banking and investment advisory business, rising to the executive level at several large financial institutions, Susan determined that there had to be something more to life. On a spur-of-the-moment trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2011, Susan met Julianna Poldi, an abstract artist and teacher who gave an abstract art workshop. It was as if Susan had finally found the right side of her brain…and her passion! She started painting for the first time and has been painting full-time ever since. Susan believes that the colors, textures, line, and movement in her work are influenced by the many places she has visited around the world.

Susan relocated from New York City after her banking career to Newport, Rhode Island, and works out of a fabulous studio in an old commercial carriage house. Susan is an active member of the Newport Art Museum’s Board of Trustees.
