Winter Speaker Series 2025: Meg Winslow

February 1, 2025 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm At the Museum and Virtually on Vimeo

Landscape and Commemoration

Mount Auburn is the first American cemetery that purposely combined elements of experimental gardening, magnificent architecture, picturesque landscape design, and access to nature, starting a trend across the nation in the mid-19th century that led to the creation of the first public parks in this country.  As the Curator of Historical Collections and Archives at the Cemetery, Ms. Winslow will discuss Mount Auburn’s creation, history, and original features, as well as its current multifaceted role as a cemetery, arboretum, outdoor museum, and wildlife habitat.

The lecture will be held in person at the Museum and virtually on Vimeo, and will be followed by audience Q&A and tea reception.

Lecture recording will be available to subscribers and ticket holders.

About our Speaker

Meg Winslow, is the Curator of Historical Collections & Archives at Mount Auburn Cemetery. She is responsible for developing and overseeing the Cemetery’s permanent collections. These include the institutional archives, the special collections of fine and decorative art, and the collection of artistic monuments in the landscape. Meg has led the successful implementation of two federal grants; in 2017, to document and research Mount Auburn’s Significant Monument Collection – the first cemetery to receive such a grant; and in 2020; for a crowdsourced project to help transcribe Mount Auburn’s founding records. In 2017, Meg received the Historic Resources Preservation Award from the Watertown Historical Commission, and in 2022, was awarded the Historic New England Prize for Collecting Works on Paper. Meg is co-author with Melissa Banta of The Art of Commemoration and America’s First Rural Cemetery, Mount Auburn’s Significant Monument Collection, in its third printing. She has served on the board of the Association for Gravestone Studies, and on Committees for the Massachusetts Historical Society where she is a Fellow. She currently serves on the Sculpture Committee for the Friends of the Boston Public Garden. Meg has a deep love of the connection between art and nature at Mount Auburn.
