Winter Speaker Series 2023: Steven Alm

February 18, 2023 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm At the Museum and Virtually on Zoom

Rhode Island's Native Bees, Monarch Butterflies, and Planting for Pollinators

We are delighted to welcome Steven Alm to the Winter Speaker Series to share research he and fellow habitat conservationist, Gary Casabona, have been dedicated to for many years.

All tickets purchased for Gary Casabona’s talk will automatically transfer to this lecture.

Did you know that biologists estimate there are over 200 different species of native bees in Rhode Island? These native bees were responsible for all of the native plant pollination until the colonists introduced the European honey bee in 1622.

Steven Alm’s talk will cover the life cycles of several native bee families, their social or solitary habits, and their relationships with native plants for pollen, nectar, and nesting sites. The talk will emphasize recommendations on the best native shrubs and herbaceous plants to create hospitable habitats for our declining species of native pollinators, particularly for the threatened yellow bumble bee, and the monarch butterfly.

The lecture will be held in person at the Museum and virtually, and will be followed by audience Q&A and tea reception.
