¡Qué Vivan los Muertos! Una celebración de Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead Celebration)

Bienvenidos al Newport Art Museum para ¡Qué Vivan los Muertos!, una celebración tradicional mexicana de los seres queridos que han fallecido. Organizado por el museo y Jesús de la Torre, empleado de Conexión Latina, este evento está abierto a todo que celebran o están curiosos sobre la festividad de Día de los Muertos.

Jesús de la Torre, un experimentado educador de México, nos guiará a través de las festividades incluyendo actuaciones, música, creación de arte, comidas ceremoniales y mucho más. Aprenderemos de Jesús y nuestros vecinos el significado cultural de las decoraciones tradicionales del altar tan como el papel picado, calaveras, y cempasúchil (flores de caléndula azteca). Juntos crearemos las decoraciones que embellecerán nuestra ofrenda comunitaria. Los asistentes de todas las edades serán bienvenidos y se les animará a compartir poemas, recuerdos y epitafios en honor a los amigos y familiares que han fallecido, colocando sus fotos en la ofrenda. Disfrutaremos de la comida tradicional y de la música mientras Jesús nos dirige en el agradecimiento a los antepasados y a la comunidad por celebrar la fiesta con nosotros.

Welcome to the Newport Art Museum for Qué Vivan los Muertos!, a traditional Mexican celebration of loved ones who have passed on. Organized by Museum and Conexión Latina staff and Jesús de la Torre, this event is open to all who celebrate or are curious about the Day of the Dead holiday.

Jesús de la Torre, a seasoned educator from Mexico, will lead us through the festivities including performances, music, art-making, ceremonial foods and more. We’ll learn from Jesus and our neighbors the cultural significance of the traditional home altar decorations such as papel picado (punched paper), calaveras (decorative skulls), and cempazúchitl (aztec marigold flowers). Together we’ll create the decorations that will embellish our community ofrenda. Attendees of all ages will be welcome and encouraged to share poems, memories, and epitaphs honoring friends and family members who have passed, placing their photos on the ofrenda. We’ll enjoy traditional foods and music as Jesús leads us in thanking the ancestors and the community for celebrating the holiday with us.

Jesús de la Torre was born in Monterrey, Mexico and grew up in San Antonio, Texas. He received his Master’s degree in Bicultural Studies from the University of Texas in 2007 and moved to Jamestown, RI in 2018. He has been an elementary school educator for 13 years and is the co-founder of Colectivo Cultural, an organization that preserves and celebrates Mexican culture. De la Torre has hosted numerous educational community workshops on the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead in RI, and participates annually in the Muertos Fest in San Antonio, Texas.

Conexión Latina Newport was established to support the needs of the Hispanic/Latino community by creating connections and partnerships with resources and advocacy, and creating pathways to increase access and representation throughout the city of Newport. By creating access, and building upon the strengths of the community, CL’s aim is to build the confidence, independence and integration of all Hispanics/Latinos in Newport.
