Taller de intercambio de cuentos bilingües en Conexión Latina (Bilingual story-sharing workshop at Conexión Latina Newport)
¿Celebran el día de los muertos o algo similar? A quien honra durante sus celebraciones? ¿Cuáles memorias o tradiciones son las más significantes para ti? ¿Se cambió las celebraciones desde su niñez? Si pudieras escribir el epitafio de un ser querido, que diría?
El Día de los Muertos, que se originó en México, es una importante y alegre celebración anual que honra a los amigos y miembros de la familia que han muerto. El Museo y el empleo de Conexión Latina, educadora, Jesús de la Torre, y el artista en residencia, Orlando Almanza están colaborando a celebrar el Día de los Muertos, ¡y estás invitado! Únase a nosotros en 2 talleres comunitarios bilingües para compartir fotos y cuentos de, y hacer decoraciones para esta celebración! Los cuentos y fotos se convertirán en inspiración para Orlando Almanza a crear un telón de fondo pintado para dos altares de la comunidad – uno para Conexión Latina, y la otra para el Newport Art Museum – que exhibirá para la festividad del Día de los Muertos.
Este taller se celebrará en Conexión Latina Newport en Broadway.
El segundo Taller tendrá lugar el sábado 22 de octubre, de 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.
El evento Qué Vivan los Muertos tendrá lugar en el Museo de Arte de Newport el martes, 1 de noviembre, de 5:30 – 8:00 pm.
Gratis, todas las edades son bienvenidas. Se incluyen los alimentos y todos los materiales.

Do you celebrate Día de los Muertos or something similar? Who do you honor during your celebrations? What memories and traditions are most meaningful to you? Has your celebration changed since you were a child? If you could write the epitaph for a loved one, what would it say?
Día de los Muertos, which originated in Mexico, is an important and joyful annual celebration honoring friends and family members who have died. The Museum and Conexión Latina staff, educator Jesús de la Torre, and Museum artist in residence Orlando Almanza, are collaborating to celebrate Día de los Muertos, and you are invited! Join us for 2 bilingual community workshops to share pictures and stories of, and make decorations for, this celebration. The stories and pictures will become inspiration for Orlando Almanza to create painted backdrops for two community altars – one for Conexión Latina, and one for the Newport Art Museum – that will be displayed for the Día de los Muertos holiday.
This Workshop will be held at Conexion Latina Newport on Broadway.
The second Workshop will take place on Saturday, October 22, from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.
Qué Vivan los Muertos event will take place at the Newport Art Museum on Tuesday, November 1, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm.
Free, All ages are welcome. Snacks and all materials included.

Jesús de la Torre was born in Monterrey, Mexico and grew up in San Antonio, Texas. He received his Master’s degree in Bicultural Studies from the University of Texas in 2007 and moved to Jamestown, RI in 2018. He has been an elementary school educator for 13 years and is the co-founder of Colectivo Cultural, an organization that preserves and celebrates Mexican culture. De la Torre has hosted numerous educational community workshops on the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead in RI, and participates annually in the Muertos Fest in San Antonio, Texas.
Orlando Almanza, the Museum’s October Artist in Residence, is a painter born in Cuba in 1989. He earned a sculpture degree in 2008 from the Professional Academy of Visual Arts in Las Tunas, and a printmaking degree in 2014 from the Institute of Superior Arts in Havana. He studied classical drawing with René Negrín and was studio assistant to artist Carlos Quintana, there developing an interest in oil painting. Almanza has exhibited extensively in Cuba, the US and Mexico and is represented in the collections of the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, CDE Cuba – Cuban Art Magazine, and numerous private collections. He lives in Havana, Cuba and Portland, OR.
Conexión Latina Newport was established to support the needs of the Hispanic/Latino community by creating connections and partnerships with resources and advocacy, and creating pathways to increase access and representation throughout the city of Newport. By creating access, and building upon the strengths of the community, CL’s aim is to build the confidence, independence and integration of all Hispanics/Latinos in Newport.
