Winter Speaker Series 2023: Monica Young – Virtual Tickets
January 28, 2023 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm At the Museum and Virtually on Zoom
The Art & Science of James Webb Space Telescope
Please note in person tickets for this lecture are SOLD OUT. Join us virtually instead!
The James Webb Space Telescope is a feat of engineering and a long-awaited stride forward in many areas of astronomy. Communicating these advances to the public might seem easy when the space telescope is sending down awe-inspiring images of newborn stars, tenuous dust, and distant galaxies nearly every day. But these images are not showing visible light — they’re taken at infrared wavelengths — and there are many decisions made behind the scenes in order to convey the data in a meaningful way. We will take a deep dive into some of the beautiful images and other data coming from Webb to learn about the birth of new stars today and the dawn of galaxies long ago.
The lecture will be held in person at the Museum and virtually on Zoom, and will be followed by audience Q&A and tea reception.
About our Speaker
Monica Young is News Editor at Sky & Telescope, a magazine and website for astronomy enthusiasts. For the past decade, she has written, commissioned, and edited articles about the latest news in astronomy science, observing, and technology. She won the Solar Physics Division Popular Media Award for her November 2020 feature article on the Parker Solar Probe, the first spacecraft we’ve sent to “touch” the Sun. Monica came to Sky & Telescope after completing a PhD in Astronomy at Boston University, which included a predoctoral fellowship at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and conducting a year of postdoctoral research at Penn State. When not looking up at the stars, she enjoys hiking and chasing after her three children.
