Final Marks, A Film Viewing in Remembrance of John “Fud” Benson

November 13, 2024 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for the screening of Final Marks: The Art of the Carved Letter, a documentary that offers an intimate look into the life and legacy of master stone carver John Everett Benson, affectionately known as “Fud.” Benson continued his father’s revival of the centuries-old craft of letter carving at The John Stevens Shop in Newport, Rhode Island. Founded in 1705, the shop has maintained this ancient art through generations, despite modern industrial methods taking over.

The film provides a glimpse into Benson’s team in the late 1970s as they worked to preserve this unique art form. Final Marks captures the timeless elegance of stone carving, highlighting how the craft, though once considered endangered, endures as a mark of both memory and history.
