2022 Pre-Juneteenth Celebration
June 18, 2022 3:00 pm - 9:45 pm Great Friends Meeting House lawn, 21 Farewell Street, Newport
JUNETEENTH is the national celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. In 2020, Sankofa Community Connection advocated successfully for Juneteenth to be recognized as an official holiday in Newport, and the Museum is proud to join them in honoring the historical impact and progression of African American heritage and culture in Newport.
This is the second annual Pre-Juneteenth Celebration, a community event open to all that includes interactive art-making with Museum educators, delicious cultural soulfood, drumming and live music, storytelling, a parade to and dedication at the Liberty Tree, and outdoor movies.
“Our celebration of the Black Community goes beyond history offered in traditional educational environments as we want to celebrate the legacy of remarkable and determined individuals who often go unrecognized,” says Sankofa’s Founding Executive Director, Niko Merritt. Join us!
