Call & Response 2021
May 28, 2021 - August 22, 2021
Ilgenfritz Gallery
Last year, the Newport Art Museum brought together works of art by contemporary artists with works from the Museum’s collection for the first “Call & Response” exhibition. This popular exhibition showcased the ingenuity and creativity of regional artists while also bringing rare museum objects out from storage and into the galleries.
For “Call & Response 2021,” we once again invited several New England artists to plumb the Museum’s permanent collection in search of inspiration. The Newport Art Museum is home to approximately 2,800 works of art including prints, drawings, photographs, sculptures, paintings, textiles, and decorative arts, as well as archives. The exhibiting artists were free to explore and view anything in the collection, and then to choose an object (or objects) to which they would respond with an original work of art in any medium. The final exhibition will feature each artist’s new creations alongside the collection works that inspired them. In the end, visitors will enjoy compelling new works of art and view the collection from fresh viewpoints of practicing artists.
Featured artists include:
Sophia Ainslie, Anna Kristina Goransson, Maxime Jean Lefebvre, Joel Orloff, Destiny S. Palmer, and Coral Woodbury.
