Strategic Prevention Partnerships and Newport County Prevention Coalition promote community health and well-being through action, education, support and collaboration. To accomplish this mission, we work independently and with partners to promote positive behavioral health for people of all ages by providing resources to meet substance use prevention and mental health needs, identify behavioral health issues and needs within our community and develop an infrastructure to meet identified needs by adapting evidence-based policies, practices, and programs to serve our local community.

Founded in 1998, The RI Black Storytellers (RIBS) is a small non-profit based out of Providence, Rhode Island dedicated to promoting the awareness, appreciation, and application of Black storytelling. They define Black storytelling as an oral art from African and African descended people from around the world. They share their craft through performances, workshops, cultural, educational, and historical experiences. RIBS does not just tell Black stories; they also aim to help others do the same. They do it not just because they believe it is important for Black communities to know their own history and culture, but for everyone to experience Black culture presented by Black people.

Sidy Maiga is a Djembe Master from Mali. As a teenager, he apprenticed under some of Mali’s most renowned Master Drummers. Sidy has been an active member of the local music scene, playing not only traditional Malian music, but also a fusion of Malian music with Latin, Blues, and Brazilian. His love for sharing his music and culture with the community inspired him to begin Afrika Nyaga, a West Africa Dance and Drum Festival. This festival brings together both local and international musicians and dancers to perform across Rhode Island. Maiga has received the MacColl-Johnson Fellowship (2012), the RISCA Folk Arts Fellowship (2012and 2022). Sidy has performed on stages with many international artists. Sidy has released two albums, Maliden (2011) and Africa United (2014), which features musicians from across the world. He’s now recording his third album. Maiga has since pushed his craft further by completing his degree at Berklee College of Music (2020), where he studied music production, business, and composition. Sidy’s djembe that he had been playing for over 20 years is currently being displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. For more information visit sidymaiga.com.

Conexión Latina Newport (CLN) was established to support the needs of the Hispanic/Latino community by creating connections and partnerships with resources and advocacy, and creating pathways to increase access and representation throughout the city of Newport, Rhode Island. We hope that by creating access, and building upon the strengths of the community, we will build the confidence, independence and integration of all Hispanics/Latinos in Newport.
