Newport String Project: Spring Concert

April 16, 2022 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Griswold House

Chamber Music and Daffodils!

It’s spring and the daffodils will be visible in all their golden glory for the Newport String Quartet’s Spring Concert at the Museum. We’re delighted to welcome the Newport String Project back to the galleries for a live chamber music performance – a celebration of spring sure to lift your spirits – in time for Newport Daffodil Days.

For this concert, the Quartet will perform the rarely heard Vistas al Mar by Catalan composer Eduard Toldra Soler, inspired by the maritime-themed poetry of Joan Maragall. The performance will also feature Caroline Shaw’s contemporary classic Entr’acte. The quartet is delighted to be joined by guest artist Jesse Holstein (viola) for a performance of Brahms’ monumental String Quintet No. 2 in G Major.

This concert will take place inside the Museum’s largest gallery.
Seating is limited – reservations are highly recommended!

Please note that in accordance with state guidance, masks are optional, but recommended for those who are immunocompromised or unvaccinated.

About the Newport String Project

The Newport String Project is a chamber music performance and youth mentoring initiative that aims to build a community that crosses boundaries of generation, heritage, and economic circumstances through access to inspiring musical experiences for all. The project is anchored by the residency of its ensemble in residence, the Newport String Quartet.

Inspired and incubated by nationally acclaimed organization Community MusicWorks (Providence), the Newport String Project was founded in 2012 by two graduates of CMW’s Fellowship Program, EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks and Ealaín McMullin. The project is dedicated to exploring the intersection between artistry, education and social change.

The project aims to strengthen the social and cultural fabric of the wider Newport community by presenting a professional chamber music concert series, featuring both classical and traditional music styles in keeping with Newport’s folk heritage. Now in its eighth season, the project is focused on growing the organization so that it can support a long-term, professional chamber music residency that builds authentic relationships between professional musicians and the community at large.
