Creative Writing in the Galleries!

Last Workshop! Space is limited. Register today!

Write Rhode Island is a creative writing competition sponsored by Providence’s School One and Write Rhode Island writers for students grade 7-12. Students’ passion and interests are at the heart of their connection to literature. Write Rhode Island’s aim is to encourage students to become better writers and to provide an opportunity for them to develop their own expressive voices and share their perspectives of the world. Join us at the Newport Art Museum for short, guided, creative writing activities in the galleries, facilitated by professional Write Rhode Island writers.

Workshop Leader:

Maggie Miles is a retired teacher and lifelong learner. Since relocating to Barrington three years ago from northern New Jersey and becoming a Rhode Islander, she has taught at School One, Hamilton House and the Lifelong Learning Collaborative (LLC). Last year Maggie taught an intergenerational course on “Writing About Art” at School One/RISD Museum/Hamilton House. She enjoys teaching workshops to teens and teachers around Rhode Island as part of Write Rhode Island, our state’s short fiction competition for RI students in grades 7-12.

About Write Rhode Island

Write Rhode Island is a creative writing competition sponsored by Providence’s School One and the Goat Hill writers group for students grade 7-12.

Students’ passion and interests are at the heart of their connection to literature. Write Rhode Island’s aim is to encourage students to become better writers and to provide an opportunity for them to develop their own expressive voices and share their perspectives of the world.

Public, private, parochial or home-school students in Rhode Island currently in grades 7-12 are eligible to participate in Write Rhode Island. Though students are not required to sign up for a workshop to enter the competition, we hope you will take advantage of this special opportunity to visit and work in the Newport Art Museum galleries.

Winners of Write Rhode Island will receive prizes, awards and publication in a print anthology. This anthology will be published in March and there will be several book launches, readings and celebrations.
