Winter Break Day 1: Family Films & Animation Workshops

Celebrating the Magic of the Moving Image

February 16, 2020 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Film Screening 1: Let's Get Animated

1:00 pm

Animated films are magical. An animator takes non-living materials and through filmmaking techniques like stop-motion, creates the illusion that something is alive. This series of short films provides endless art-making inspiration – from humble matchstick characters to imaginative claymation chess pieces!

Multi-national / In English or with English subtitles / 70 min / All Ages

Tickets: Adults $10, Youth and Seniors $8, available in advance and at the door.

Mini Guided Tour & Drop-In "Animate the Museum" Workshop

2:00 – 3:15 pm

Explore a series of artworks in the galleries in a mini Docent-guided tour, and then head to the Animate the Museum Workshop to create some animated film magic with Museum educators!

Intriguing characters inhabit curious places in the current exhibition artworks, and will get your visual gears moving. Using a variety of materials and imagery from artwork in the Museum’s permanent collection, learn the basics of stop-motion animation and make your own miniature film. Write your story’s plot, sketch your storyboard, build characters, select a backdrop, and learn how to capture your film shot by shot on an iPad.

FREE, drop-in, no reservations necessary.

Film Screening 2: WILD CHILD

3:15 pm

The 2020 Wild Child film program, curated by California’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival, brings a series of shorts with a timely message. These films, made with a variety of filmmaking techniques, are intended to equip children with an appreciation for our planet and with the knowledge and skills to fare well as its passengers and stewards.
