Japanese aesthetics are often profoundly different from those of the Modern West. Some works such as Samurai swords and silks are well known and greatly appreciated in the West. Other media such as bamboo carvings are less recognized yet of great interest. This illustrated slide lecture will focus on the representation of Japanese aesthetics, using valued works as well as more mundane objects to exemplify some of the foundations for the Japanese concept of beauty.
