Deep reverence for the natural world and appreciation of the landscape are an integral part of Japanese culture. Chrysanthemums, bamboo, beaches, waterfalls and sacred trees all make their appearance in media such as lacquers, paintings, screens, ceramics and sculpture. The Japanese appreciation of nature is a key element in art works from that culture even to the modern day. This illustrated slide lecture will use various art works as examples of the profound connection most Japanese have felt over the centuries with the natural environment.
