Newport, RI: Award winners for the "2010 Newport Annual" will be announced Friday, February 5 during a reception hosted by the Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Avenue, 5 - 7 pm. The reception marks the opening of the Museum's winter exhibitions. The "Newport Annual" opens to the public on February 6 and runs through May 24; "Newportant People: Watercolors by William Heydt" is running through April 4; "Windows to Our Soul: Portraits in Charcoal by Brenda Levasseur" is running through March 28. The reception is free for Newport Art Museum members; $10 for non-members.

The "Newport Annual" is the most comprehensive exhibition of contemporary regional art, and draws hundreds of entries in a multitude of media including painting, watercolor, prints/drawings/pastels, three-dimensional, photography/video and mixed media. The Museum invites independent experts from the world of art to determine which works will make it into the "Newport Annual." This year, Mónica Ramírez-Montagut, Curator of The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut, will make those difficult decisions. Ramírez-Montagut was formerly the Assistant Curator of Architecture and Design at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Ramírez-Montagut will select artists for awards in multiple categories, including "Best-in-Show," each of whom will receive a cash prize. Curator Nancy Whipple Grinnell will present the Newport Art Museum Award. Winner of the Newport Art Museum Award will receive a future solo exhibition.
